WELCOME FROM HAYWOOD STREET:

UPDATES:

This week, artist Scotty Utz donated this powerful sculpture to Haywood
Street. Click here to read all about it.
All kinds of new merchandise is now available! Click here to view and
purchase online. Proceeds benefit the core programs of Haywood Street.
Many thanks to our friends from Covenant Community Church and
Central UMC who came out last weekend to offer a little TLC to our
campus and grounds. They worked tirelessly in the hot sun to weed
and mulch, and assembled 5 new picnic tables for the back garden
area!  Inside, they organized and cleaned, and applied a strategic coat
of paint on trim, rails and doors to brighten up the common areas.

A HAYWOOD STREET REFLECTION BY: CADE

Hello Haywood Street!

My name is Cade Barefoot and I am the new ministerial intern.  My fiancé Taylor and I are rising third-years at Duke Divinity School and are excited to have been placed in Asheville for the summer.  While I am serving at Haywood Street, Taylor will be in ministry at Haw Creek Commons and Bethesda United Methodist Church.  We both feel so blessed to have the opportunity for field education at such incredible placements.

Although I have just gotten to Haywood Street, I can tell that this congregation lives into its mantra of “Holy Chaos.  Abundant Grace.  Welcome Table.”  On my first Sunday at Haywood Street, I was overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and smells that accompany a day of meals, fellowship, and worship.  To the untrained eye, this might look like regular ol’ chaos, but at Haywood Street this is a chance for incarnational ministry.  With an unconditional hospitality, the entire community gathers together, eats alongside one another, and participates in worship in a way that celebrates the sacred worth of every person.  By encouraging congregational engagement in each aspect of worship—from  the sermon and prayers, to the sacraments of baptism and communion—Haywood Street recognizes the abundant gifts that God has graced the members, companions, and friends of this congregation.

Over the course of this summer, I hope to learn the many lessons that being in ministry with this community has to offer.  I am so thankful for my supervisor, my lay mentoring team, and all those involved at Haywood Street who will encourage and challenge me in my call to ministry.  I hope to return from my time at this place more prepared to stir up holy chaos, communicate God’s abundant grace, and welcome my neighbors to a place at the heavenly table.

Grace and peace,
Cade Barefoot
