Sunday afternoon an enthusiastic response greeted the musicians who gathered to celebrate much-loved Edward Smith’s first anniversary as organist at Haywood.  Edward, also organist and choir director at St. Mathias Episcopal Church, shared the limelight for this ‘Evening of Spirituals’ with Kate Watson (soloist), Karen Whitley, (flute), and members of his St. Mathias choir.  Kate presented a soulful rendition of “Deep River,” the choir brought the house to its feet with their contribution of “Ain’t Got Time to Die,” and Karen gave a heart-felt tribute to her son David with an emotional performance of “Amazing Grace.”  Edward thrilled us with his energetic and animated direction of the choir, and added his own organ and vocal solos to round out the program.  Of special note was the participation of seven-year-old Kyra Sowell, who more than held her own with the adults as a soprano in the choir.  Once homeless, Edward’s story of success is still being written, and we congratulate him on this year of service!
