LeroyHow long have you been a part of this community?
“It’s been about 5 or 6 months. Since last year. Recovery brought me here. This is my way of giving back to the community. I needed something to keep me occupied. I wanted to give back for all of my wrongs.”

Why are you a companion? Why are you here?
“I love the fellowship of this place!”

Where do you help serve and how are you involved with Haywood Street?
“I serve tables at the Downtown Welcome Table.”

Is there a story about your experience you want to share?
“I never thought I would be able to do community work like this. It has given me so much joy to help others. I feel that God is blessing me and it gives me the opportunity to bless someone else from my heart. I love service.”

What is one of your favorite things to do when you’re not here?
“I’m constantly in recovery. I’ve been a recovering alcoholic for a year now. I’m slowly and surely getting my life back to normal. I’m always going to meetings, groups, and speaking events. I’m really busy. I try to get into as much as I can to stay away from old habits.”

What would you tell other people who don’t know about Haywood Street?
“To sum up in one word: it’s a blessing. Just to be able to come and fellowship. I’m so thankful for you all having me.”
