In preparation for winter on our city streets, our friend Shofar is beginning a ministry he is calling “Cover Asheville.” He will be collecting and distributing blankets, tents, sleeping bags, and tarps. His goal is to help every homeless person here stay warm this winter. If you are interested in joining him in this effort, please call him at 828-388-DAY7.
Shofar, born in Philadelphia, PA, came to Asheville just before Bele Chere this summer, by way of Eugene, Oregon. His dad is dead, but his mother still lives in Philadelphia.
To know Shofar is to love him! Already, his electric personality — a crooked cap, huge smile, and open, cheerful, enthusiastic manner — has won him many friends. He just oozes with talent; he is a poet, an excellent pianist and drummer, and sings as well. Currently he is homeless, staying at the Salvation Army, and is looking for a job as a server in an upscale dining establishment.
Faith plays an important part in Shofar’s life. He grew up in a very conservative church, but feels he has grown away from some of the legalism he experienced there. He views denominations as causing division, and would like to see us all just be united as brothers and sisters, sharing the love of Christ.
