A HAYWOOD STREET REFLECTION BY: KALEB

Our year-long Community Residency program is designed to equip mission-minded individuals for effective & transformative ministry WITH the poor. The next program year will be (approximately) beginning of June 2021-end of May 2022. Additional info available here.

Kaleb is our current Community Resident. Here’s what he has to say about the experience:

“When you walk on campus at Haywood Street you immediately feel the Holy Spirit. As the Community Resident I have had the joy of living on campus. You are able to embrace every part of the community here. You see familiar faces passing by or friends searching for a safe place to rest. Haywood Street is special to many, it is home for those that do not have a place to call home. As the Community Resident you get to welcome many onto campus and you are often the first person people encounter. It has been a joy building and fostering relationships with friends in our community. Even through a pandemic we have been able to put relationships above all else. When reflecting on the position I immediately think of the word formation. You can always expect the unexpected, God is present in the mundane here as well as the chaos. You see new things, learn new ideas, and are constantly challenged. I have learned many valuable lessons here but one I will always cherish is how to prioritize self care. Due to living in a global pandemic, this year has been nothing close to what I expected but through it all God has been constant. I have found God through the Haywood Street staff, friends I have made in the community, and companions. The community here is special, because of the Gospel we get to encounter those who are least like us and love each other the best we can at that given moment. This community has affirmed my calling to ministry and I strongly believe the position of Community Resident has greatly prepared me for my future in ministry. Anyone who wants to encounter a wonderful community, challenge themselves and grow in their faith should apply for the Community Resident position.”
