Looking for a place to plug-in? Dishroom support is needed on Sundays, 7:30am-10:30am. Reach out to Hannah if you’re able to to help!
Many unconventional, yet holy, happenings take place in the Haywood Street sanctuary. This week, staff and volunteers attended a training led by Buncombe County’s post-overdose response team; a group made up of community paramedics, a peer support specialist, mental health clinician, and program manager.
We are grateful to have the life saving skills of overdose assessment and Narcan administration; to grow further into care and compassion for our Friends who use illicit drugs.

A HAYWOOD STREET REFLECTION BY ALI:
My name is Ali. I have been working in the Respite for about three and a half years. Most recently you have probably seen me with my son around campus. I work the weekends, and have recently been given the opportunity to start working with Companions that want to be involved in Respite.
Respite is a unique part of Haywood Street. We are staffed 24/7 365 days a year. We are a closed unit, so Friends do not come and go. Our Friends come to us to heal and rest. Community is the foundation and core of who we are, and we embody relationship above all else to the fullest.
Companions coming into Respite can expect to be a listening ear and hold space for Friends. Have a cup of coffee, or bring ice cream as a treat. Take friends for a walk in the garden, or outside for some air. Bring your favorite game to play, or participate in devotions. Help a Friend find some clothes from the Clothing Closet.
We look forward to seeing Companions return to Respite soon. I will be at the Companion Orientations June 1st, and June 15th, if you have any questions for me. My email is ali@haywoodstreet.org if you are not able to attend orientation.
