FACES & STORIES: MISS MARY

It’s no secret. Miss Mary’s Meatloaf is one of the most beloved meals at the Downtown Welcome Table. When word gets out that it’s going to be a Meatloaf Wednesday, our Friends come out  of the woodwork.

Miss Mary spent part of her early childhood in Asheville’s Hillcrest Apartments neighborhood. When her mother passed though, a day before her eleventh birthday, she moved in with her aunt in Brevard.

Eight kids filled the small, Brevard home. Mary was the oldest and expected to help with the cooking. This is the time and place when the famous meatloaf recipe emerged. Mary says it could be served up any day of the week, but most often on Sundays when friends and family gathered after church. Collards, potato salad, and mac ‘n cheese rounded out each plate. Mary learned at an early age how to feed the multitude and how to feed them well.

Ask Mary what the secret ingredient is in Miss Mary’s Meatloaf and you’ll get a quick answer with a coy smile. “L.O.V.E.”

* Stay tuned for a special fundraising event that will celebrate this special dish and the L.O.V.E that goes into it.
